What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System and it measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band 1) through to expert (band 9).

Taking the Exam

You need to take the “Academic” version of IELTS to work in most professions in the UK. If you take an IELTS course with us we will enter you for the exam at the end of your course. The cost of the exam is GBP£165.00. It takes around 40 minutes on the train from Worcester to the exam centre in Birmingham so it’s easy to get to.

IELTS for Nurses coming to the UK

The Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) regulates nurses working in the UK. If you are coming to work in the health sector you have to be able to show you are competent in English. One of the ways to do this is to pass the IELTS exam and you must achieve:

  • an overall score of at least 7.0
  • at least 7.0 in each of the 4 skill areas

You can take the higher scores from two IELTS exams, but must not have scored below 6.5 in any category in either of the test sittings. The two test sittings must be taken within six months of each other to be considered.
